How to Spend a Winter Weekend in Vienna, Austria

Winter can be a difficult tine of year to travel in Europe if you are more of a tropical, beach-loving kind of person. The vast majority of European cities, even as south as Greece, see cold temperatures from December through March.

But we weren’t willing to let the cold stand in our way of seeing yet another bucket list city, such as Vienna.

Month: March 2019

Accomodations: Hotel Ziper – Lange Gasse, 49 Vienna, Austria 1080 This was the perfect location for us, centrally located and about a 15 minute walk to the Vienna Town Hall Rathausplatz.

The hotel was clean, breakfast buffet was sufficient for our family of five and delicious. The rooms were not overly spacious but normal for European standards and we were plenty comfortable.

Recommendations: Our Favorite Meal of the Trip: Cafe Maria Treu around the corner from Hotel Zipser. We recommend ordering the traditional Austrian dishes “Knodel” (dumplings), “Eiernockerl Nockerl” (little dough balls fried with egg and topped with fresh chives) and “Spatzle” (similar dough balls fried with bacon, onion and cheese) and “Kaiserschmarrn” (pancakes with apple sauce and icing)

Things to Do: Big Bus Hop-on Hop-off Tour, Rathausplatz, St Stephen’s Cathedral, Graben, 7 Square, St Peter’s Church, Hofburg Imperial Palace, Vienna State Opera, Natural History Museum & Kunsthistorisches Museum, Votive Church
